January 24th 1914

I got up at 8:30 and just as I was finishing breakfast a postcard came from Mr. Paton asking Cyril to go down anytime after nine o’clock. Cyril got ready + went by the 9.18 train to see what the “important” matter Mr. Paton had stated, was. He came back and told us that something had been going wrong on the 3.55 on Thursday, the train I was on. I went to the clubroom in the afternoon + we had signalling indoors all afternoon. D.S.H and I went for some coal (it was a beautiful sight to see us pulling a grimy little wagon). D.S.H. said he will take me to Cloud End on Saturday in the motor. I hope I can go. I had a small ride on his motorbike.
