January 31st 1914

In the morning I did some lessons. In the afternoon I went down by 2.23 or late 2.14 to town to meet D.S.H. Jones. He took Cyril to Deansgate and we stopped at the Oxford St. Photo Shop to change 3 of the slides which did not fit. Then we proceeded through Didsbury, Cheadle, Alderley and Congleton. Jones’s hat blew off 3 times. When we arrived at the farm we found that Mr and Mrs Boon had gone out. We had tea in Congleton. Outside Congleton we again tried to light the acetylene head lamps, in the rain, but it was of no use. Later on we tried, after going about 10 miles with oil lamps, and suddenly succeeded. Then the train began again + I arrived home at about 9.0 PM. (We stopped 3 or 4 times to fill with petrol). [I steered a little way, we went very well]
